Coach and Volunteer Requirements
- Coaches & Assistants: All coaches and assistant coaches MUST be age-appropriately certified and complete all AYSO and California volunteer training and certification requirements.
- Technical Area: A maximum of two certified coaches are permitted in the technical area during a game.
- Field Positioning: Home teams occupy the North or West side of the field. Spectators must sit on their respective sideline between the two penalty areas and are not allowed to coach (i.e., providing technical instruction to any player).
Zero Tolerance Policy
- Behavior: Absolutely no inappropriate behavior towards any player or volunteer is permitted.
Number of Players
- 14U: 11 versus 11, with a minimum of 7 players per team on the field. Players must play at least 3 quarters of the game. Late arrivals must play a minimum of 3 quarters or the remaining time. No restriction on goalkeeper playing time.
- 12U: 9 versus 9, with a minimum of 6 players per team on the field. Players must play at least 3 quarters of the game. Late arrivals must play a minimum of 3 quarters or the remaining time. No restriction on goalkeeper playing time.
- 10U: 7 versus 7, with a minimum of 5 players per team on the field. Players must play at least 3 quarters of the game. Late arrivals must play a minimum of 3 quarters or the remaining time. Maximum of 2 quarters of goalkeeper playing time.
- 8U, 7U, 6U: 4 versus 4 with one substitute. Teams are split in half, playing on two side-by-side fields. No minimum number of players required. No goalkeepers.
Ball Size
- 14U: Size 5
- 12U & 10U: Size 4
- 8U, 7U, & 6U: Size 3
Duration of the Game
- 14U: Two 35-minute halves with a 5-10 minute halftime break. Running clock. Games can end in a draw during pool play. 5-minute grace period from the scheduled start time.
- 12U: Two 30-minute halves with a 5-10 minute halftime break. Running clock. Games can end in a draw during pool play. 5-minute grace period from the scheduled start time.
- 10U: Two 25-minute halves with a 5-10 minute halftime break. Running clock. Games can end in a draw during pool play. 5-minute grace period from the scheduled start time.
- 8U & 7U: Four 10-minute quarters with 1-2 minute breaks between quarters and a 5-10 minute halftime break. Games can end in a draw.
- 6U: Four 5-minute quarters with 1-2 minute breaks between quarters and a 5-10 minute halftime break. Games can end in a draw.
Note: Games starting late still need to end 5 minutes before the next game's scheduled start time. Halves shall be shortened equally at the referee's discretion.
Laws of the Game
- 10U, 12U, & 14U: Matches are played according to IFAB Laws of the Game and AYSO National Rules and Regulations.
- Heading: Deliberately heading the ball in 12U and below is not allowed. Play is stopped immediately, with an indirect free kick awarded to the opposing team.
- 10U Specific: No punting. Build-out line rules apply.
- 8U & 7U: No offside; No goalkeeper; all free kicks are indirect free kicks.
- 6U: No offside; No goalkeeper; no free kicks.
Referee Duties
- 14U: Region 2 will supply a qualified referee. Each team provides one assistant referee for the game following their own. Teams playing the last game of the day on a field provide referees for the first game of the day.
- 12U & 10U: The home team provides two referees (one being the referee of the game), and the visitor team provides one referee for the game following their own.
- 8U & 7U: The home and visitor teams each provide one referee for their own game. Coaches cannot act as referees.
- 6U: No referees are used; coaches help players follow the Laws of the Game.
Note: Referees must wear a full uniform (jersey, black shorts, and 3-stripe socks) and display the AYSO badge.
Red Card Ejection (12U & 14U Players Only; Coaches in All Competitive Divisions)
- Players: Must sit out the remainder of the game and cannot participate in the post-game handshake. They must also sit out the following game.
- Coaches: If a coach receives two yellow cards in one game, they must leave the field. An assistant coach already on the team roster may step in. If no assistant coach is available, the game is considered terminated and results in a forfeit.
Note: Yellow/Red cards should not be given to 10U players; coaches should remove out-of-control players.
Lineup Cards & Reporting Game Results
- Lineup Cards: Must be completed prior to the game using the ones printed from the Team Management Site. For 10U+ teams, both sides of the lineup card must be printed.
- Reporting: Final scores and any yellow/red cards or coach/spectator ejections must be recorded on the lineup cards. Cards must be returned to the Division Coordinator on the same day by the Referee.
- Incident reports: Required for any injury, threat, or property damage. Referees must file a match report for any ejection or serious incident.
